-- Cutscene --

The door to Stelios Kader's quarters wisps open as the captain steps through. In his right hand at his side, he holds a few papers -- X-Colony 1 detail. After his door closes behind him, Kader lets out a sigh and rubs the bridge of his nose briefly.

Sacuori! he swore in his head. Why now?

Kader crosses the room, placing the papers on his desk. As he stands and stares down at them, he intends to launch into a good, long think, but a voice shoots out from the corner of the room.

"Hard day, Stelios?" A female figure sits in the shadows.

Kader pauses, staring hard at the documents in front of him. Why! Why have you come to me again? he cries out inside. Steadying himself, he looks over his shoulder in her direction. "Just an assignment we got in today. It's a bit... troublesome."

"Your search still hasn't turned anything up. Is that right?" The figure appears to be holding something.

Kader whips around in fury. "Look! I've been trying. Everyone else who was there, I found them. I put my life on the line to find and question them." His face darkens as his eyes drop to the floor. In a darker voice, he continues, "I killed them, those who knew."

"Stelios, calm yourself. In these things you have done well."

"And my duty? I'm already one kind of traitor."

"There is simply the matter of the one left."

Kader glares hard at the corner. "And you think there's something to be gained from that? What could he have possibly known? His rank wasn't so high; hell, he was the one who --"

"Yes. He was." The figure leans forward into the light, revealing the face of a charred corpse, featureless and dripping flesh. "Now wouldn't that be terribly ironic then? And we've seen our share of irony, Stelios, haven't we?

"But on second thought, go on your little trip. There might be something interesting waiting for you, as long as we're speaking of irony."

The numb Kader neglects to respond. As this vision slips away, for an instant he sees a wicked smile looking at him from among the loose bundles of cloth the woman holds.

-- Approx. Three Weeks Later (Castoff) --

Szar Station floats ahead of Betalla's orbit, secure in one of its LaGrange points. It had been built for use as a construction base by the Stellar Navy and saw plenty of demand during the Betalla-Muntoas War, but a year prior it had been turned over to the Colonial Council for the purposes of building and launching X-Colony 1.

Thus it is here, sixteen days after Colonization Day, that the X-Colony 1 crew is gathered to start the long journey ahead.

Dr. Alex Bishop has been on Szar Station for three days so far, and aside from a few meetings each of the two had to take part in with their different departments, Robin Kretoia has been his near-constant companion. The two of them have just taken their places to observe the Castoff Ceremony. Robin smiles to Alex excitedly. "Hopefully we can get this boring old thing over with soon, right?"

Lt. Daniel Morris and Lt. Bart Wescott stand at attention among their fellow squad members and the others who have been chosen to serve on board the X-Colony 1. All of the military personnel, having arrived earlier that day, are formally lined up at the far left and right ends of the large stage. "Better get used to standing, eh?" Bart whispers out of the side of his mouth.

Dr. Arden Maersk (who arrived the previous day) and Petru Samson (who has "unofficially" been on board the station for five days now) sit at the far back of the large ceremony hall. Petru whispers, "I got everything last-minute under control. Once this thing winds down, I'll introduce you to a few of our contacts on this thing."

Maersk grunts quietly, then whispers back, "How trustworthy are these 'contacts', anyway? As far as I'm concerned, I don't trust anyone here as far as I can throw 'em."

"Which you've made abundantly clear, my friend." Petru chuckles. "They'll do what they've been instructed. Trust me; I've been in this business a long time now."

As the first few notes ring out, a voice booms over the crowd, "Please stand for the Haeleris Colonial Anthem." Everyone rises in staggered waves.

Standing, Robin mutters, "The Anthem? Then this'll have to take forever."

Standing, Petru muses, "A united Haeleris is something to get excited for indeed, eh, Arden?"

Already standing, Bart smiles to himself. Daniel figures he must have thought up a dumb joke he refrains from speaking aloud.

Arden rolls his eyes, saying flatly, "I'm utterly thrilled to my core. Do we actually have to know the words to this horse shit?"

Maersk uses the opportunity to take a look at the people around the room while they stare at the various flags of the Haeleris system.

Perception (Maersk) d10+d2+d2(action point) vs. Hard (11); roll 5

((Maersk's Plot Points -1 = 7))

Maersk slowly looks over all of those gathered here -- a number approaching 30,000, he's heard. He then looks up at the symbols draped above the stage: to the extreme edges hang the seals of stations, research colonies and the Stellar Navy, closer to the middle hang the flags of Betalla and Muntoas, and dead center is the flag for the Colonial Council below a symbol for the X-Colony 1 itself.

Alex, notices the symbol for X-Colony 1. He takes a mental note that somehow that symbol will be associated with the rest of his life. His life is now irrevocably linked to its fate. A millennium down the road that symbol will sum up his fate, quick as the speed of thought.

((Alex's Plot Points +1 = 11; Good engaging the environment and throwing in some character details. Keep it up.))

After the Anthem has concluded and everyone in attendance has taken their seats, a man crosses the stage to a single podium in the center. The murmur of the colonists hushes as he clears his throat to speak.

"Good day, all. Truly this day the Guardians have blessed us."

The man's words are echoed back to him. After having paused in anticipation of this, he continues, "My name is Maximus Drogone, and I am a member of the Civil Representative Council of our new home's Colonial Civilian Government.

"I have been chosen to speak here today not of the sweat that has gone into making this possible, not of the brilliance and bravery of those seated here today, not even of the long and unmarked path that lies before us.

"I am not here to speak to the New Colonials, those who will today be embarking on the X-Colony 1; rather, my words are for those others watching. Today I am addressing the citizens of Haeleris -- of Betalla, of Muntoas, of Sanveril and of all other places around our golden sun.

"As we sail through the stars, we leave our most precious thoughts here. Indeed, it is for you that we go forth into the heretofore unknown. We move to expand the glory of Haeleris; we aim for the continued rise of its prosperity. Just as the original colonials did when they left Betalla for Muntoas, when they created not a single colony on a single world but an idea of what Haeleris can be, we leave our home on this day to pursue another such idea.

"Haeleris is beautiful -- our golden home, our god of endless bounty who shaped us of clay with his caressing rays of light. But humanity is more beautiful still, and that is the idea we carry with us to Touketti. Some might say it sacrilege to leave our creator, our father; but just as a son must set out on his own to prove his worth, thereby showing his father that the years spent under his tutelage and care were well spent, so we too leave our home.

"We too will show our god father that none of our achievements here were in vain; and one day we will return so that we might bear our fruits before him and make him proud. We will show him what humanity can be.

"Health and happiness, in the name of Those Who Watch from Beyond."

The crowd repeats his final words excitedly before roaring out in applause. Mr. Drogone, smiling, begins to exit the stage.

Daniel and Alex have both noticed that their companions have begun to tear up.

Amid the applause Petru whispers to Maersk, "You recognize him, right? In the later years of the war, he was part of a faction in the government that called for reconciliation with Betalla. After the war's end, he joined the Colonial Council and was part of its expansion."

Maersk applauds with the rest of the audience, Baa. Baa.

"Yeah, one of those Guardian jack-offs. I remember him distinctly... Back then he wanted nothing more than for us to realize how much closer we are to the Betallans than some of our own allies. Would've gagged me with prayers and good wishings if given the chance."

Maersk pauses to chuckle bitterly before continuing, "I remember Warren nicknamed him 'Drag-on' because he wouldn't shut the fuck up."
