-- Flashback --

"So what's on the agenda, Alex?" asks Dr. Gnaeus Holt as he leafs through Alexander Bishop's doctorate portfolio.

Bishop had come to the office of his official graduate adviser and unofficial mentor to finalize his graduation request -- his third one, as he was set to receive his Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from New Sazmis City University.

"I hear you've gotten some pretty impressive offers from several companies." Dr. Holt quickly signatures his name on a document before looking up at Bishop, smiling.

((Alex's Plot Points: 6))

"Interesting...to say the least." Alexander fidgets uncomfortably in his chair avoiding his mentor's gaze.

"What do you think you'll be going for?" Dr. Holt arranges Bishop's papers and returns them to their folder.

Alexander pauses for a moment, "I don't know. I haven't given it much thought. I suppose I would like to go into research."

Dr. Holt leans back, nodding. "There's money in that. Stability." He briefly runs his fingers through his short beard and then smiles. "I always figured you for a young man who had loftier priorities though, to be honest."

A frown creeps across Alexander's face, "I just want to learn and explore the world. I kind of just feel I have reached the end of all of that. Those papers in your hand signify the end of my career. There are no more epiphanies in my future, only spending my life chasing ghosts in the hope of stumbling upon something great. I can't help but to think that my Ph.D will just be wasted like so many before me who died achieving nothing."

Alexander rests himself deeply into his chair, thoughts tracing around great images of those who had achieved great things in their time. His heart sank, he felt as though his end had come and now only a life of tedium waited for him.

Perception|Empathy (Alex) d6+d8 vs. Easy (3); roll 13 (Extraordinary!)

Dr. Holt feigns surprise as Alex speaks. Afterwards he lets Alex brood for a moment before erupting in laughter and applauding.

"Oh, what doom we're all fated to! Pushing papers and treading old ground, what a waste. I agree! That's why I became a professor; if nothing good ever comes of what I'm doing, at least that's my students' fault and not mine, right? And that means epiphany hunting is your job."

Bishop can sense that Gnaeus has a bit more up his sleeve.

"But it's still my job to help you get there, right?" Dr. Holt says, reaching into his desk to produce yet more papers. "Maybe stumbling upon something great won't involve chasing so many ghosts, Alex."

Alexander stares down his nose at Holt,"What do you mean?"

Alexander, sensing something amiss with his mentor, wonders what mischief he is scheming. However, if Dr.Holt truly had an opportunity for him he would have to listen. How could he deny himself such an opportunity?

Dr. Holt slides the papers over in front of Alex.

"X-Colony 1. Heard of it?"

As Alex looks over the papers, Gnaeus continues, "Of course, you probably have. They've been soliciting volunteers for weeks now -- on television, before movies, during music feeds -- hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they got the temples involved."

The papers include an "open letter," several pages that describe the mission in full detail and a couple of blank applications and other materials.

"There's your untread ground, son."
