"Research? I see. Yeah, we're sure to run into some new stuff out there."

She chuckles. "I'm just along for the ride. It couldn't have come at a better time for me, I think. I wasn't sure the whole Master's thing was for me; to be honest I was just about to give up on it and do what I do best anyway. I know for a fact I couldn't take it as far as you have."

Robin pauses a beat and then exclaims, "Oh, that's right! You're a doctor now! Congratulations!"

"Yea...research. It seems that is what I was born to do." A hint of despondence traces across Alex's face briefly. " I think this should be fun if we don't end up in a black hole, break apart in hyperspace, suffer a massive disease outbreak, suffer a food shortage, or just plain out die. Yea, its gonna be real fun!"

The morbid tone in Alex's voice does not escape him. He fears he have may let slip more than he wanted to. Alex looks Robin over, finding her gleeful attitude and marred beauty appealing. He sighs to himself as his thoughts drift back through the view the view ports to the vast expanse of space.

"What a downer," Robin says, mock pouting. Her smile, never held at bay for long, returns. "I wouldn't worry too much about anything like that. I hear they've spent a lot of time planning all of this out -- calculated out the best warp path, sought out the best doctors and researchers -- and I even think the ship has some facilities for growing food in case our stocks need bolstering.

"As for 'plain-out dying,' I'm afraid I can't do much to assuage your fears there."
Robin grins vivaciously. "But if you're worried about the fringies or something, I'll be trying to keep our boys in the... air. Let's just hope I'm worth what I was paid for, right?"

"Hey, I have confidence in you. As much time as you spend rattling around inside of those husks you aught to know more than just about anyone. Still, though, all of these unknowns bother me. We don't know much about where we are going, just that we are going there.

Alexander attempts to hold on to his forced smile as he thinks of all the conundrums that could potentially befall them. The unknown is unknown after all. Alexander soon finds himself scanning the part of the ship he is in. Talking to Robin has almost made him forget that he is suspended in space by the power of science alone. A power mankind, despite all of its accomplishments, did not fully understand and still has trouble wielding.

"Worth what I was paid for"? Alex notices her strange choice of words.

"Worth what you were paid for? What do you mean?" Alex's muddling thoughts clear and begin to focus completely on Robin. Such a strange choice of words. What could they mean?

"Well, I guess 'paid for' is a bit out of line. But you do know the person who recruited us was paid a commission, right?"

"No, of course I didn't know!", for an instant Alex's timid demeanor fades into rage before he composes himself.

"What do you mean a commission? I thought this thing was purely voluntary for us. Why didn't he cart his ass up here and get paid himself?", his demeanor has faded to rage again. He attempts to compose himself, succeeding in only muffling his shouts turning them to whimpers instead.

Robin frowns sympathetically. "I'm sorry. I thought you knew. I don't think it's so bad, really. They were really itching for the last couple thousand people, and so they found some recruiters across the system to make the process for finding volunteers easier. A reward would be kind of expected, I think; besides, it's better than just being drafted, wouldn't you say?"

Although Alex's understanding of FTL Theory is poor and it is something that he has done very little reading about, he knows that all of the science behind it coalesced into its currently accepted form during the waning years of the Betalla-Muntoas War, about 20 years ago. The Warp Drive that was fathered by these scientific advancements has been in testing ever since; for the most part these tests were conducted with few incidents, the only problem being that errors in coordinate calculation often resulted in thoroughly unexpected jump destinations.

It is highly likely that FTL Theory would have found practical applications by now were it not for the investments made in post-war construction on Muntoas. With the planet's economic conditions and the standard of living finally above the water's surface gasping for air, four years ago the Colonial Council secured the Stellar Navy's support and gave the go-ahead for intensified testing (experimenting with a variety of factors, e.g., type and amount of cargo carried, frequency of jumping, distance jumped both long- and short-range, etc.) and an easing into application.

The results were so resoundingly and unequivocally positive that X-Colony 1, a project proposed nearly forty years ago but abandoned repeatedly for a series of reasons (impractical without FTL, too busy at war with Muntoas, too much invested in Muntoas' recovery), was resurrected.

This is more-or-less the extent of Alex's knowledge on the subject.
