I thought it'd be fun to design a small order based (very loosely) on Dacer's ideas so that his philosophy has some sort of presence after the fall of the Sith - without his endorsement at all, of course.

Chris, if you'd rather not use any of this, that's cool. It's mostly a thought exercise on my part.

(This was all inspired by Thelema, left-hand path religion, vamachara tantra, Zen Buddhism and Sufi Islam.)

Post Spyridon's Disillusionment Reply with quote
Ovam Spyridon was an early student of Master Islad, being taken in for training by the Antaran Order at the age of 12. A natural loose cannon, he often found himself admonished by his teachers for his emotional outbursts and spontaneity. Over time he found that he could not understand nor conform to the passion-forbidding doctrine.

By age 17 Spyridon had decided to pursue another path. He left the Antaran Order to train under Master Valyagar's Jedi. Again he was met with criticism for his reliance on emotions, but he refused to discontinue his training. Eventually he was dispelled from the Jedi for his chaotic behavior when he had just turned 19.

Determined to learn more, Spyridon learned of the third individual who had fought the Sith. After months of work, he finally found out where Dacer Seurg lived and his new name and job. Having scheduled a private piloting lesson with "Laro Creed," Spyridon then confronted Dacer and asked for training.

Dacer refused, but at Ovam's urging he did speak at length about his views of the Force. Though certain things were distasteful to Spyridon, he found much of what Dacer described as "what he used to think" very attractive.

Taking this philosophy and making his own adjustments, Ovam Spyridon went off to pursue the Force in solitude. Once he had fully realized his philosophy, which he called Maivasi Potentium, he established the Maivasi Order.

Post The Philosophy of Maivasi Potentium Reply with quote
The Maivasi Potentium holds to three truths:

1. There is the Force. It has no intrinsic qualities or truly a will of its own. It is impartial. There is no light side; there is no dark side; the Force itself is amoral, for morality is the domain of sapients. The power of the Force is to be respected, but for the most part it is a tool.

(Force Sensitivity is not required to join the Maivasi.)

2. Passion can be channeled to many ends - not merely evil ones. Passion is the essence of the self, and its churning chaos sets in motion the cycles of life and time. The use of passion is not only tolerated but encouraged, for without conviction all actions are meaningless.

3. It is imperative that the weak be protected, that good will and justice be spread throughout the galaxy. One seeks to power oneself primarily (in the end) to use this to help others. This does not mean that evil-doers should unquestioningly be crushed; it is better to seek camaraderie with them and to guide them to use their passion to different ends.

Ethics
For the Maivasi good is those drives, beliefs, thoughts, actions, etc. that lead to the betterment of oneself and others - ideally both, but self-sacrifice is exalted if one truly believes that is truly what one wills.

Evil is simply those same things that lead to harm. They (with exceptions) are not forbidden, however, because to some extent one must come to terms with the negative to grow. The Maivasi try to establish a safe, hidden environment for the pursuit of certain illegal behaviors; the rationale is that once an individual has had their fill of such things, they will no longer be so tempting.

The Maivasi do not morally deliberate before acting, however, because to do so would be to shroud the self and its real wants. In the end they feel that one's behaviors ought not trap the person; it is the actor who is important and not his actions, and all "truly willed actions" lead to personal growth.

Pursuing the Will
Maivasi believe that one's spontaneous volition is key to understanding the self. The self is a core of chaotic, creative energy that is shrouded: the expectations of others, the wants and peculiarities imposed by society and restrictive ethics form the layers that cloud true realization of self. In order to peel these layers, one must learn to draw sharp distinctions between the wants imposed by outside forces and what one truly wants.

These wants should not be denied but pursued - immediately and spontaneously, for rational deliberation is an impediment. The ultimate end in doing this is to realize one's True Will and thus one's True Self. The Maivasi believe that once this happens, the actions of the self-enlightened cannot lead to anything but good; as upon discovering the True Self, one will turn outward to help and to guide others (but this is not to say that they do not endeavor to help others before reaching this point).

Code of Conduct
1. Do not be afraid to follow your will. Remember that you can ask others of the order for help, guidance or facilitation. Remember that you do not have to ask permission.

2. Murder, torture and outright sadism are prohibited. We believe that such truly horrendous wants cannot be those of anyone's True Self. This does not, however, amount to strict pacifism, as one must combat the evil that simply will not step down.

3. Help others to follow their personal path to self-realization at whatever opportunity, but remember that everyone's path is truly personal and that you might not readily understand another's.

4. Do not tolerate injustice. Endeavor to lift the oppressed, heal the suffering, repel the attacker.

5. Do not think. Act.

Post The Maivasi Order Reply with quote
The Maivasi Order does away with bureaucracy. There is no hierarchy; the freshest initiate is as respected as the senior members, though Spyridon himself does hold a first-among-equals position that is only vaguely defined and seldom relevant.

Much of the activities of the order revolve around discussion and the facilitation of desires; as long as those desires fall within the code of conduct, its members will in many cases go to any lengths necessary to help their comrades fulfill them. Force sensitives have their own separate meetings that deal with learning the Jedi arts that they've inherited, and these also tend to be very freeform.

Major decisions (such as the undertaking of "social service missions") are decided by consensus. There is a single vote, and no one has veto power. A tie in a yea-or-nay matter is considered a consensus of yea; when there are more complex options, Spyridon breaks a tie.

Because the Maivasi Order often engages in illegal behavior or that which would be considered subversive, they try to stay underground and keep their numbers low. Also because the Maivasi relocate frequently, its members generally commit to a transient lifestyle; however, there are some very small enclaves that are left behind at times.

I think I might work this in. I don't know if it has a place in the current story-line but I might work this into future adventures.
Hell, I may re-write a complete section of the story to fit them in. I'll try and make them a "shadow-organization" of some sort.

Post Comparison with Other Philosophies Reply with quote
COMMONALITIES

Jedi
- As the Jedi, the Maivasi believe that one should act in the interests of good, whatever that entails.
- The Maivasi agree that individuals are naturally good; what the Jedi call "falling to the dark side" is to the Maivasi the result of perversions inflicted on the self by the outside world.

Antarans
- The Maivasi also adhere to a freeform style of organization and training.
- As with the Antaran philosophy, Maivasi Potentium does not focus specifically on the Force.
- The Maivasi also see the Force as generally amoral.

Sith
- The Maivasi respect passion and encourage its use.
- The Maivasi do not forbid the use of dark side Force powers.
- The Maivasi also seek self-empowerment.

DIVERGENCES

Jedi
- The Maivasi detest the forbidding of passion; The Jedi Code is flat-out wrong.
- The Maivasi find the Jedi idea of "balance" abhorrent - or, more accurately, the way they pursue it. They are too polemical.
- The Maivasi find the Jedi bureaucracy restrictive.
- The Maivasi do not put any stock in the Unifying Force and fate; the flow of time is determined by the Will.
- The Maivasi do not seek to play a part in galactic politics.
- The Maivasi do not consider the light side / dark side dichotomy and do not actually revere the Force.

Antarans
- The Maivasi detest the forbidding of passion.
- The Antaran concept of "balance" is too high-minded and rational according to the Maivasi.
- As the Maivasi see it, denial of the self in favor of "balance" is repressive.
- Whereas the Antarans look both inward and outward to pursue their goals, the Maivasi look primarily inward.
- The Maivasi believe that individuals are naturally good and that seeking to be neutral is just plain odd.
- The Maivasi do not seek to play a part in galactic politics.

Sith
- The Maivasi believe that, while the Sith's core beliefs may be right, their ends are perverse.
- The Sith denial of love is anathema to the Maivasi.
- The Maivasi do not consider the light side / dark side dichotomy and do not actually revere the Force.
- The Maivasi do not seek to play a part in galactic politics, which is to say in this case that they do not want to conquer the galaxy.
