BSE: CoP is set in Champaign County, Illinois, primarily focused on the cities Champaign and Urbana and the village of Savoy. Located in eastern Illinois (and a slight bit on the north side), Champaign County has a population of 179,669 (compare with 260,512, 699,827 and 845,303, the approximate populations of Fayette county, Jefferson county and Hamilton county in Ohio, respectively).

Geography

Quote:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champaign_County%2C_Illinois

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,584 km˛ (998 mi˛). 2,582 km˛ (997 mi˛) of it is land and 2 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it (0.07%) is water.

Because Champaign County is situated on a large and very flat plateau, it had virtually no natural drainage, so that much of the County consisted of wetlands until drainage ditches were built, beginning in the 1870s. This was an example of an upland marsh, which resulted in a high incidence of malaria before the late nineteenth century.

The topography of Champaign County was formed by the Wisconsin Glacier about 10,000 years before the present. Lobes of ice from what is now Lake Michigan crossed the county, creating a deep pile of glacial soil, up to 300 feet thick, topped by numerous moraines forming small, flat watersheds with no outlets.

Champaign County is situated on the divide between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Rivers flow out of Champaign County to the east, west, and south. The Kaskaskia River has its origin to the northwest of Champaign, draining the western side of that City. The Kaskaskia flows toward the southwest, joining the Mississippi south of St. Louis, Missouri.

The Embarras River, on the other hand, drains the south-central portion of the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Area, originating in southeastern Champaign and flowing through the experimental fields on the southern part of the campus of the University of Illinois. The Embarras is tributary to the Wabash River and Ohio River systems. The northeast corner of Champaign, the central portion of the University campus, and the northern part of Urbana are drained by the Boneyard Creek, which flows into the Saline Ditch, a tributary of the Vermilion and Wabash Rivers.

County Government, etc.

Though the county itself is named Champaign, the county seat is not in the city of Champaign but in Urbana. I'm not sure what else to say here yet.

Chambana (Champaign & Urbana, Savoy)

Chambana (or Champaign-Urbana) refers to a metropolitan area comprised of Champaign to the west, Urbana to the east and the village of Savoy to the south. It has a total area of 41 square miles and is populated by roughly 150,000 people (this figure includes students at the University at Urbana-Champaign, who comprise about 27% of metro residents). Here is an overall map.

Parks: Champaign Park District, Urbana Park District, Robert Allerton Park

- Universities, Colleges, Schools

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is located jointly between the two cities. It is the flagship campus for the University of Illinois system.

There is also a small community college in Champaign called Parkland College.

High Schools: (Champaign) Central High School, Centennial High School; (Urbana) Urbana High School, University Laboratory High School; Savoy is part of Champaign's school district.

- The City's Immediate Surroundings

Unlike coastal cities, Chambana is surrounded by farmland instead of sprawling suburbs. Serving the same purpose as suburbs are small towns and villages scattered throughout Champaign County. Professionals, professors and other such people who work in Chambana often make their homes in these small towns; as such, the average yearly salary and education levels of these places are uncharacteristically high.

This is all I'll put up for now.

If you have any setting questions while making your characters, you can ask them here. If it's something your character should know, I'll find out and tell you. And if it's something really important that I just haven't thought of, I'll put it in my summary above.

You can be from just about anywhere if you make it work. You should be in Champaign County during the week before the event, though. (And you should be around enough to know one other PC fairly well and at least one more as an acquiantance.)

Pre-Apocalypse

Not many people have voted in the poll; but just from talking to you guys, I know you definitely want time to get into character. So here is the idea I came up with:

- Normal gameplay will be preceded by flashback sequences for each character.
- In these flashbacks I will focus on the five events you provide in question #25 on the questionnaire. Describe them with enough detail (the sequence of events, people present [and what they're like], emotional impact, etc.) that I can make good use of them.
- After all of this, normal gameplay will begin on (in-game) Monday, September 9th, 2002. We can go into as much depth as you guys want over the next five days.
